The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

georgia cavalry

I am back, still struggling to find who was a Georgian cavalryman captured on March 1, 1865, at St Stephen, north east of Charleston, SC. He told to the one who got him that he had been at Chattanooga and Savannah, therefore he would have belonged to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th (Avery’s), or 6th Regiment Georgia Cavalry. The issue is that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th Georgia, under Hannon (since February 15) were at about 30 miles east of Augusta when Charleston was evacuated. Why would these regiments have moved to St Stephen, at the rear of Hardee after he had left Charleston?
As for the 4th Regiment, the available information is so limited that I am not able to determine if one of its companies was near St Stephen end of February.
Is one of you able to give me an explanation?
