Burkhalters of the 61st Georgia

The book (online), Biographical Souvenir of the States of Georgia and Florida, 1889, includes a sketch of the Burkhalter family. Among the four brothers and three sisters born to William M. (died 1858) and Anna A. Burkhalter were:
- Gabriel M. Burkhalter, born in Montgomery County, Georgia on 11 July 1836. He enlisted 25 August 1862 in Company E, 61st Georgia. His first battle was Fredericksburg; he was absent sick in the hospital during the Gettysburg campaign. He participated in several battles thereafter as part of General Early's command, took part in the siege of Petersburg, and ended the war on picket duty at Appomattox.
- John M. Burkhalter, enlisted in fall 1861 in Company E, 61st Georgia. He was wounded at Winchester and died a few days later, in 1863, age 24. [A soldier identified as J. M. Burkhalter was reportedly wounded at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863.]
- Mary A. Burkhalter married Hughes Wooten, also a member of Company E, 61st Georgia, who died of sickness in a Virginia hospital in 1863.
- Joseph Clinton Burkhalter was killed at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863, age 21. He was buried on Josiah Benner's farm; in September 1871 he was reinterred at Laurel Grove cemetery in Savannah.
