The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

Herb,

I'm afraid the future is not bright, for a number of reasons.

As time continues to distance us from the war and its participants, anything connected to the Confederacy is demonized by academia and their allies in the media. History of the American South, when it is taught in the public schools, is pretty negative in its interpretation. The National Park Service, in the last 30 years, has taken a lead role. Visit the new (since 2008) park service Visitor Center @ Gettysburg for a prime example. I'd say most of the museum has little to do with the actual battle and campaign; with heavy emphasis on slavery; the causes of the war; emancipation; and the civil rights' movement.

Finding younger Americans (under age 40) sincerely interested in American history and Southern history, is becoming a challenge.

There are lots of Georgia war stories still waiting to be told. The problem is will there be an audience to read them?

Best Regards,

Greg C. White
