It is not clear if he died from combat related cause. The Battalion was engaged at Murfreesboro December 30/31, 1862 however he is not recorded as a casualty on available records.

He was transferred out on 5/6/1863
On 5/6/1863 he transferred into "A" Co. GA 37th Infantry
He died on 9/30/1863
He was listed as:
* Hospitalized 12/28/1862 Murfreesboro, TN

John Goldsmith enlisted June 13, 1861 in Cobb Co., Georgia, recorded at the Nov/Dec, 1863 muster as absent January 14, 1863 having been sent to Hospital from Murfreesboro, Dec. 28 ______, no further muster rolls, War Dept. records [2/7/1920] show that he died at home, September 30, 1863, his widow Elizabeth Goldsmith, Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia, filed for the settlement of his effects November, 1863
