Re: Captain Robert A. S. Freeman

Ken,

Knowing that you are a fellow baseball fan, I'm going to throw you a knuckle ball !

In the 9/15/1863 "Weekly Columbus Enquirer" is a list of casualties from Benning's
Brigade that were left behind @ Gettysburg, falling into Union hands. For the 2nd
GA Regiment, Co. D, is listed a "H. Blount, shoulder; sent off 20th July". This is
the Thomas H. Blount that the CSRs indicate was wd in the shoulder @ Gettysburg;
captured; sent to David's Island; and died 8/8/1863; buried @ Cypress Hill Cemetery.

In the Chickamauga casualty list for Co. D, 2nd GA Regiment that I located in the 9/29/1863
"Columbus Daily Sun", it has "Thomas E. Blount, bowels". His wound was likely mortal.

Company D, the "Burke Sharpshooters", was from Burke County. I checked the 1860
Census for Burke County and there are TWO Thomas Blount's residing there.

Thomas E. Blount was born ca.1842; Thomas H. Blount was born ca.1846.

I believe both served in Company D, and either Thomas E's CSR was omitted or
the two men had their records merged into one.

Sound plausible?

Greg
