Thomases Georgia brigade

This brigade spent July and most of August 1864 on Bermuda hundred, a quiet front where it could recuperate. Along with it was the North Carolina brigade under Alfred scales.

After a careful study of these two brigades I have concluded that they had lost much their fighting ability either in 1863=or in early 1864. They never bounced back.

My question to you is what caused these brigades to become less effective.
