Jim,
I physically checked my 39th Georgia Compiled Military Service Records (CMSR) microfilm roll for the soldier's last night. They are definitely 34th Georgia soldiers. They also show up in the 1860 Dade County, Georgia Federal Census as GASS.
The information you provide above is from Lillian Henderson's series of books, "Roster of the Soldiers Confederate States of Georgia, 1861-1865," Vol 3, page 807. They show up as GOSS in Henderson's and in the CWSS as GOSS. Although Henderson's books are a decent starting point, I always recommend to everyone to dig into the original records. I have compared and contrasted now hundreds of CMSR records and pension files and the volume of material that has been missed is consirable. I have at least a couple of dozen CMSR's that were missed for my soldiers. The data that was left out of the CMSR extractions I believe was intensionally left out but I do not know what the method of research, ground rules, researchers, limitations, etc. were for her and her research team. It is just not small details but blatantly obvious things.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Respectfully,
Gerald D. Hodge, Jr.
