I've found a number of men from the Toombs-Benning Brigade detached on this type service. They did their work at arsenals in Macon and Augusta, shipyards in Columbus, etc. The Confederacy found certain artisans to be far more valuable performing their craft than carrying a rifle, and some otherwise fit craftsmen appear to have been pulled from the ranks. A number of amputees, and troops otherwise unfit for field service, were also assigned to the shops - there may be some indication of this on a soldier's CMSR.
