"historical coffin crew" - Petersburg

Found in the Atlanta Constitution, 1913:

“He was the famous leader of the “historical coffin crew” at Petersburg, which, secreted in pine caskets, smuggled a store of arms and ammunition through a regiment of Yankees”

the subject was an old vet, dying and suffering dementia. The author is unidentified but clearly coherent. The author mentioned "historical coffin crew" as though it was something other veterans might know about; the quoted portion represents all that the article had to say on the subject. Anyone ever seen anything related to this?

thanks in advance,
