Sallie Fannie (Sarah Frances) Reid was the daughter of the Mayor of West Point, Troup County, Georgia - John Reid. The unit was named in her honor as it was fully "funded" by her.

Sallie Fannie was rumored to be romantically connected with Brig Genl RC Tyler during his stay in West Point during '64 and '65. It has been determined that she had already been "arranged" to marry WD Grant (as in Grant Park) of Atlanta which she did after the War. The lived at the corner of Peachtree and Pine streets in what is now downtown Atlanta. Later they built and moved to a new home which is now Cherokee Town Club.

Sallie Fannie's and WD's daughter, also Sallie Fannie, grew up to marry Joe Slaton who later became Governor of Georgia.

The Atlanta Historical Society has a huge family collection which if I remember correctly is the "Reid, Grant, Slaton, Inman Collection" Very interesting stuff.

I copied Sallie Fannie Reid's recipe for muscadine wine from that collection and it is a most enjoyable!
