Unless you find a reference to your ancestor in a letter, diary or a book, it is unlikely you will find a reference that absolutely tells you he was a participant in the battle of Gettysburg. You can probably, find this information in his Compiled Military Service Record which will show whether he was present or absent at the time of the battle.
