You mentioned "the roll". Are you talking about his actual service file or some other document?

Confederate soldiers at Macon GA had been paroled rather than surrendered. The standard notation on the hospital roll would have been "returned to duty" for any soldier released from the hospital. It was still functioning, patients and Confederate medical personnel were still there, and they kept records until the last patient was able to go home or died.
