I have record of an East Georgia vet matriculating at the Medical College of South Carolina in 1867. According to their website, www.musc.edu, the The Medical University of South Carolina opened in 1824 with seven Charleston physicians and thirty students. First grads in 1825 - the "good old days" for sure.

During the war James Fogle (Theodore Fogle's brother) attended classes at the Medical College of Richmond, now part of the VCU, and worked in Chimborazo, passing the Medical Examining Board as an Assistant Sugeon in Nov 1864. VCU's website (http://www.medschool.vcu.edu/about.html) states their medical school was founded in 1838
