Andy:

If I'm not incorrect, the Medical School at Virginia Commonwealth is actually the Medical College of Virginia. If the two are separate, I need to dig up a list of graduates.

My interest has been the Hampton Legion. I have tracked the men of the Legion who were physicians, and have tried to identify the medical schools they attneded. This is an estimate, off the top of my head wqithout going through the rosters, but I suspect that I have been unable to identify a medical school for nearly one-third of the physicians of the Legion. As to those who were commissioned surgeons or assistant surgeons, I can identify a medical school for all but one, and I strongly suspect he graduated at the University of Pennsylvania. But as to the rather large number of men who are identified as doctors who served in the ranks -- many as officers -- there are at least a significant number for whom I cannot yet ascribe a formal medical education. I am sure that I have missed some medical school graduates, but there you are. Does anyone ahve any knowledge of exactly a person became a "doctor' in 1860?
