Re: 4th La. Soldier Stephen burial 1864

Ron --

I really don't want to contradict Dr. Bergeron, but the date of transfer is incorrect. From the Official Records --

SPECIAL ORDERS No. 129.

ADJT. AND INSP. GENERAL'S OFFICE, Richmond June 3, 1864.

X. Two Louisiana regiments will be detached from the brigade commanded by Brigadier-General Quarles and transferred to the brigade commanded by Brigadier-General Gibson.

By command of Secretary of War:
JNO. WITHERS, Assistant Adjutant-General.

The transfer evidently didn't take place until sometime after July 10, 1864. The Army of Tennessee order of battle lists the 4th Louisiana Regiment with Quarles Brigade on that date. General Hood requested the transfer the following day --

NEAR ATLANTA, July 11, 1864.
General B. BRAGG:

GENERAL: Can I get the two Louisiana regiments in Quarles' brigade for Gibson? And can I have Brig. Gen. J. C. Brown promoted to command Hindman's division? It is very important.

J. B. HOOD, Lieutenant-General.

Also, Shoup's war diary for the Army of Tennessee includes the following entry --

August 5. -- Enemy made an assault on Gibson, Lee's Corps, and by force of numbers drove in our line, capturing some 100 prisoners and the entrenching tools on their immediate line. Later in the day we re-established our line on a better position than before.

It appears the the August 5th date of death is correct as you stated.
