Pretty much the same today. I know that when I was in the Navy, we all called the Corpsmen "Doc," an, at elast as to those who served with Marine units or on small ships or units, they knew as much trauma medicine as many physicians. They certainly earned the title "Doc," and I know that Army medics also do. My very limited reaearch seems to indicate, thouhg, that at least some of the hospital stewards, litter bearers and nurses were in fact doctors in civilian life, which could only have been beneficial with regard to patient care.
