Bob,
I don't know if I can answer this question, but will make a stab and give you a suggestion. The state arsenal, magazine, depot, and penitentary were destroyed. The prison had actually been made into an factory early in the war and the prisoners made weapons. These were the only things of military value in Milledgeville when Sherman's men arrived. There is a good description of some views by Union soldiers of Milledgeville in Hugh T. Harrington's "Civil War Milledgeville" and "More Milledgeville Memoires". Of course there was a great amount of vandalism, desecreation, and theft. My suggestion is to read Harrington's books and/or contact him with the question about Milledgeville, he is a remarkable Milledgeville historian. Dave Wiggins
