James,
The 59th Georgia Infantry Regiment served from early 1863 through Appomattox in Gen. George Thomas ("Tige") Anderson's Brigade. Anderson's Brigade originally consisted of the 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th Georgia Regiments and the 1st Kentucky Regiment. Anderson's Brigade was in Hood's Divsion in Longstreet's I (first) Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. In Dec. of 1862, the time expiring for enlistment of the men in the 1st Ky., it was replaced by the 10th Georgia Infantry Battalion (a Confederate Battalion was smaller than a Regiment; about 1/2 the size) After Fredericksburg, the 10th Georgia was transferred and replaced by the 59th Georgia Regiment, staying with Anderson's Brigade until the end of the war. Anderson's Brigade was sent to the defences around Charleston, S.C after Gettysburg, while most of Longstreet's Corps was sent to reinforce Bragg and the Army of Tenneessee. Longstreet's Corps was very actively involved in the Southern victory at Chickamauga, however, Anderson's Brigade missed the fight, being in transit via rail, arriving just after the battle. Longstreet had requested Anderson;s before Chickamauga, but Richmond red tape held them up, and the order was finally sent, but the Brigade arrived after the battle. THe 59th was active in numerous battle in Tenn. (and a miserable winter) before Longsteet's Corps was sent back to Virginia and the Army of Northern Virginia to check Grant in the Spring of 1864. They were active till the end under Lee and the A.N.V. I hope this has been helpful.
