I'm seeking information on Company E , 3rd Confederate Cavalry. The company was formed in Walker County, Georgia. I believe it was with General Joseph Wheeler's command during the duration of the war. The Regiment was formed from mostly soldiers from Alabama. But, there were also companies from several counties in Northwest Georgia.
My gr-gr-grandfather, John Thomas Goodson, was born in Walker County, 12 Nov 1837. He is listed in the home of his father, Jacob Goodson in the 1850 & 1860 census. He married Sarah A "Sally" Whittle , in Whitfield County, Georgia 20 Feb 1862.
She came west to Cherokee County, Texas and thier fist child, Joseph Walter was borne there in 1863.
J T died about 1876 and is buried near Jacksonville Texas. Family oral history says he was captured and spent some time in a federal prison camp. He was released at the end of the war. He came to Texas afterword and he and Sallie had 5 children in all. But, he never recovered his health and died before his 40th birthday.
I would appreciate any information on Company E that is out there. Muster roll ? Prisoner records? Tips to send me in the right direction......
Thanks in advance for your time and help....
