Marilou,

I will second what Alan has noted.

At Vicksburg, we know some 3000 Confederate soldiers were buried in the City Cemetery. Most were re-interred by Federal forces.

A Union Col. provided the city with a list of all these men which were provided with Cyprus headboards. Over the years they disintegrated. Sometime later, the ladies of Vicksburg somehow lost the original lists.

Today, we have identified only about 1700 and have provided VA headstones, placed in the original burial grounds by State. No idea where they were originally buried. Fortunately, my ggranduncle was among those identified.

In 1998 another list of some 77, mostly men from East Tennessee, was found.
We placed tombstones randomly in two rows in the Confederate Rest section of the Cedar Hill, Vicksburg City Cemetery. Again, fortunately for me, 41 of these were men of my ggrandaddy's 43rd Tennessee.
