Re: Montgomery Guards - Augusta GA

The best place to get answers about the "Montgomery Guards" would be contemporary newspapers published in Savannah and Augusta. Georgia State Archives should be able to help with 1861-62 issues available in original form as well as microfilm. I would also expect to find originals and/or microfilm in the two cities named.

Newspapers will provide notices of company meetings, elections, drill notices, flag presenation ceremonies, letters from members, recruiting ads, letters from family members, articles by journalists and more.

It may be possible to find contemporary journals, diaries and letters to supplement and enhance published news accounts and notices. Unfortunately many histories are based on accounts written several decades after the war, and memories do fade and play tricks on us. Newspapers are the best contemporary source for this kind of information.

Unfortunately most writers never see or even try to locate these valuable civil war repositories.
