Thanks Gene. A major premise of the book is that Southern yeoman farmers and owners of only one or a few slaves did not fight to preserve slavery or at the whim of the plantation owners, rather, they fought for self-interest and believed in the Southern "Cause". Does he make an effective argument and provide sufficient evidence for this position?
