The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: John Joseph Kirkland,cpl, csa

Pete, I don't have more info on Cpl. Kirkland, but I thought you might be interested to know that he is mentioned in a letter written by R. H. Brooks, who was a private in Co. A of the 51st Georgia Infantry. I edited the Brooks letters and Mercer University Press published them a few years ago. Your ancestor is mentioned in a May 28, 1863 letter written by Brooks near Fredericksburg, Virginia. It states "...Joseph Kirkland got his leg broke and I understand it was cut off." The book is called "Keep All My Letters: The Civil War Letters of Richard Henry Brooks, 51st Georgia Infantry". I know this post is a few years after your query, but hopefully you will find it interesting...
