Re: 6th Georgia Cavalry Association

Mr. Bradley,

Listed below are the names listed as KIA for the 6th Georgia Cavalry, from Sept 12, to Sept. 21, 1863. The list is from the "Tri-Weekly Courier" Oct. 1st, 1863. All names are sic.

Co.A, T. P. Wilson
Co.B, Wm. Overby
Co.C, R.T. Walker
Co.E, A.J. Mostillo
Co.F, A.O. Riley and J.G.B. Hunt
Co.G, A.L Shirey
Co.H, Thos. Rhineheart (sup kill'd)
Co.I, 1st Lt. Jno R. Reid

I can suggest a perfect reason why Gen. Pegram reported 50 losses: he was reporting on a different battle.

In the "Offical Records" (Series 1, Vol. 30, Part 3, pages 528,529) you will find Pegram's Report, dated Sept. 24th, 1863. Pegram writes, "My loss in this fight was about 50 killed and wounded...". Pegram was refering to the engagement at Leet's Tanyard, on Sept. 12th, not Chickamauga.

If you continue to read his report, Pegram writes, what he identifies as Reed's Saw-mill, that on Sept. 19th, Forrest ordered him to hold the position. "In obeying this order our loss was about one-fourth of the command, including several officers. Nearly every colonel of the brigade had a horse shot under him."

By the way, Col. John R. Hart, commander of the 6th, Ga., had his horse shot "under him" that morning.

Regards, R. Cofer
