Re: City Point National Cemetery Burials

Petersburg is south of Richmond, by about 25 miles or so.

The Federals arrived in Petersburg after Cold Harbor - which would place it around June of 64.

The infamous Battle of the Mine (aka The Crater) occurred July 30, 1864.

Fort Steadman was one of the last remaining battles of the long and protracted Petersburg campaign, occurring on March 25, 1865. Petersburg fell about 10 days later.

With Petersburg being a hub for five different railroads, it was an important location for the CSA from a supply perspective. Federals capturing Petersburg was crucial to their winning the war.

I know this is a 3-1/2 year old thread, but for the new reader who is googling this, I think it would be quite useful.
