In Response To: Re: 6th GA. Cav. @ Chickamauga ()

I don't see where I wrote that the 6 GA. Cav. was under Forrest's command 4 months before Chickamauga; but I most certainly wrote that the command Forrest had with him when he captured Streight's command (in northern Alabama in May of 1863) numbered "about 500 effectives." I was replying to an inquiry sent to me -from a publicly posted 6th GA.Cavalry string- asking me what I thought the strengths of Forrest's brigades were at the time of Chickamauga, and I cited that number to illustrate the attrition and functional state of Western cavalry commands at that time. I'm not debating anyone; I'm answering a question that was raised and ventilated by more than one person using this public forum. I also cited the references from which I formed that opinion (which I think we all should usually do). I would also like the same opportunity to respond to questions posted here, for all to see, in an open fashion so we can discuss ideas in a free manner, one in which we can all engage, grow and benefit, rather than in a cloistered, secretive manner. The more imput, all the better Sorry for any confusion. Thank you all. Joe.
