My great-garndfather, James Warren Gates, had two uncles in georgia Regts. Lt. Herny Clay Gates and Capt Seth Henry Gates.
I understand that Lt. Henry Clay Gates was in Co.K of the 11th (but may have moved to the 59th). Capt Seth Henry Gates was in Co K of the 59th.
Henry Clay was slt in the foot during the charge of Fort Saundrs, remained in the ranks, and surrender with Lee. During a rear guard action near the surrender, he captured a sword and pistol....it was deplayed for many years at the colledge nesr Macon.
Capt. Seth Henry Gates was hit in the shoulder at Spotslvania and was home at the end of the war.
Regards, James C. Gates
