I have a copy of a letter written by Lt. Col. S. J. Winn on 23 Nov 1864. This is the manuscript for him the U.S. Army Military History Institute has (Winn, S. J. - LeighColl Bk l9: 16) which George Martin listed in his posting on Sunday, 6 April 2008, at 10:37 p.m. This letter was written by Lt. Col. Winn to a Capt. Stanford (A.A.G.) applying for ten days leave of absence to visit his brother, Sgt. Maj. A. M. Winn, who was severely wounded at the first battle of Morristown and was in the hospital at Bristol. Winn also stated his father had arrived in Bristol and desired to see him on special business. The last sentence of the letter reads as follows: "My Major, a competent officer, is present to assume command." In the heading of the letter, the location of the Headquarters for the 16th GA Battalion Cavalry was shown as being in New Market, East TN.
