Re: North Georgia Volunteer
In Response To: Re: North Georgia Volunteer ()

My reference to "North Georgia Volunteers' comes from a book I found at the Georgia National Archives, "Confederate P.O.W.'s , Soldiers & Sailors Who Died in Federal Prisons & Military Hospitals in the North." I found his name, no Company, but "North GA Vol", along with his death date and grave number. In this book the spelling of his name is "Castel."

After research of cemeteries in Frederick, Maryland, I found he is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in the Western Section, in grave #29. I have corresponded with Ron Pearcey the Supt.; he told me all the men in this section fought in the battle of Antietam.

Mr. Hodge I met you at the GA Nat. Archives in Morrow last year; your suggestion was maybe my Barney accompanied his two sons into battle, as a volunteer. This seemed very logical, until I received pictures of his headstone.
"Pvt Barney Casteel, CO D, GA Vol, CSA, Sep 23, 1862" The spelling of the name is correct.

I feel this info had to have come from official documentation.

The Barney Casteel of the TN, 59th, is my Barney's grandson. I thought for a long time, they were the same.

Thanks to everyone for any help that you may offer.
