Thanks for your input, Ed, but I have already gone through the 1850, 1860 and 1870 U.S. census records, with no luck whatsoever. I just cannot understand why he is not listed, as he was a reasonably well known stage actor, and was supposed to have been born in Boston, but performed in the south, during the war.
I do know that his parents' names were John and Hannah Bates, his father being a coach proprietor. This information is shown in his death certificate, but I just cannot find any details on the three of them in the census records that I checked.
The entry for Francis Marion Bates, as shown at the FIND A GRAVE web site, which was copied from a very inaccurate web site, is wrong in several important details, and I will be compiling data from all the official documentation I have so far collected, for inclusion at the FIND A GRAVE site, so I also need to confirm his actual service during the Civil War. Thanks to everyone for helping on this one.
