You are correct --

They got national cemeteries, memorials and monuments; Confederates for the most part got mass burials or unmarked graves, and few monuments or memorials of any description until the 1890s or later. Taxes levied on Southern citizens helped to pay for pensions for Federal veterans. State pensions in many states were not available to Confederate veterans or their widows for thirty years or more after the war.
