What was MAJ Capers up to??

My GGGrandfather, J.H. Holsey, was a member of Pruden's Battery, enlisting 26 May 1864. His service record, however, has an intriguing entry. "Dropped from roll, permanent detail by order Major {Francis W.} Capers, Oct. 20, 1864." Any idea what Capers was up to, and why he would "raid" Pruden's Light Artillery for bodies??? James Holsey was just a private and was 43 years old at the time. Would appreciate any information or informed opinions that give me a lead to follow in my research.

(Holsey did not come home from the war, leaving behind a widow and five orphans.)

Thanks in advance!
