My GG grandfather was in 35th Ga infantry and was given a handwritten furlough February 2nd at Petersburg and was not present at Appomatox 2 months later. My question is how he would have got from Petersburg back to Campbell County Ga. in those days. Were the trains running? Would he have had to walk or ride a horse? Just trying to imagine travel in those times.
