From the best I can tell from the records, he was sent home sometime between the Dandridge and Wilderness engagements, which I believe would put the regiment in eastern Tennessee at the time. My understanding is that LTC. William Hardwick furloughed at the end of the East TN campaign and fell into Federal hands and was imprisoned the remainder of the war. This leads me to believe that likely 3rd great grandpappy Bentley was either traveling with, or at the same time as the Colonel. It would seem then that the 48th moved on to Virginia at that time as well.
