The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

The Tugalo Blues, later Co. B of the 15th Georgia, was raised and initially Captained by William Millican. The company was drilling at Camp Brown, near Marietta, Ga., in April of 1861, although Reuben Bailey was not formally mustered into Confederate service until July 14, 1861, as the Regiment was officially organized. Millican would work his way up to Colonel of the Regiment, before being mortally wounded at Sharpsburg.

Reuben Bailey's records show he was killed at Gaines Cross Roads, Va., on July 24, 1863. This was a fairly small skirmish variously called "Battle Mountain" or "Thornton River," as Lee's army made the final stages of its retreat from Gettysburg, from the Blue Ridge to Culpeper area. The operators of this site can provide you with his entire Compiled Military Service record ("CMSR") - I don't recall how detailed his CMSR is, some solders' have lots of information on them, some don't.

There is some info on Gaines crossroads at my website with the material on the Gettysburg campaign. It was written several years ago and off the top of my head I don't remember how I referred to it
