According to my information the last organized CSA unit to surrender east of the Miss. River is the GMI Cadet Btln. at Augusta, 20 May 1865. They had served there as provost guards about 3 weeks (2 weeks under Union leadership) due to civil disturbances in town. On 20 May enough Union forces arrived to allow the surrender and parole of the boys and they left for home. They also were suppose to be guards by the sides of the road as Pres. Davis was led by them in chains on his way to prison in VA.

My interest is their commander was Capt. James S. Austin, formerly of the Hampton Legion Inf. and from near Greenville, S.C. Don't believe Maj. Capers was there at the time? Austin is in the cemetery where I have been the Civil War docent-specialist-researcher for ten years here in Santa Rosa, CA. Family still in area.

Anyone disagree with any of the above?

Thanks.
