Re: Alla Nakni & Col. Sampson Folsom

Halito Mac,

I've been doing a little deductive research on "Alla Nakni" and his family genealogy. I'm sure I will write some things here which you already know. As I understand it, this name in Chahta means "boy child" and that he was the son of the union of Kiamichi and Nitakechi (son of Chief Nitakechi).

I've found "many" Choctaw mixed-bloods among the Mississippi regiments and upon first looking at your posting thought you might want to check the numerous units from Mississippi which participated in the battle of Sharpsburg or Antietam; however, it appears your ancestor or his mother, at least, lived in Arkansas prior to the CW. In that case, I would look very carefully at the 3rd Arkansas Infantry Regiment. I've done a little searching and there are many Choctaw family names connected with yours or that are identified as Choctaw family names, including a host of Kings, Moncriefs, Manning, etc. As the 3rd Ark Infantry was the "only" Arkansas unit engaged at Sharpsburg and suffered 182 casualties, this unit seems a good candidate for your lost ancestor.

I will ask Bryan Howerton the ultimate expert on Arkansas CW personnel to read your posting and offer his comments.

While looking at the 3rd Arkansas Roster, if you see any other familiar and identifiable Choctaw/Native-American names, I'd be very interested.

You can look at the 3rd Arkansas Infantry Rosters at the following sites:
