Phillips in North Texas and Indian Territory

Bobby F. Carter,
.
Your "William B. Phillips, b-1835" may be the Wm. Phillips, W. Phillips, W.B. Phillips, or B. Phillips. Your Wm. B. Phillips may be one of the Phillips entries in my 128-page Name Index listed below.

It would help if we had more information on your William B. Phillips, i.e., b-1835 in what state? Who else was mentioned in the 1860 Cooke County census? Name three neighbors on both sides of his residence.

1) He may be the "__ Phillips" of Bourland's Regt.
2) He may be the "Wm. Phillips" found in R.W. Lee's Light Artillery.

Col. Bourland's office was in Gainesville, Cooke Co TX and many of his 850 named soldiers lived nearby, but many Cooke County residents enrolled in militias in counties west and south of Cooke county, esp. Montague County. ..I must quickly add that I expect to find another 50 men who patrolled for Bourland -- I have found 10 of the 50, speculation only, since my 1st edition -- because they first organized in February 1863 but nothing was recorded until March 1864. ..Bourland's Border Regiment patrolled the North and West frontier protecting the white settlers and their assets (livestock and buildings) from Kiowa and Comanche depredations.

Don't forget the aspect of reading the handwriting. Sometimes it is difficult to discern the differences in"

1) "M, H, and W"
2) "B and R"
