Dear Paula,

The 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles was also known as, Drew's Regiment and primarily was composed of "Ross Faction" mixed and full-blood Cherokees. Though originally allied with the Confederacy, this unit "en masse" defected and many of the troops became part of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Indian Home Guard Regiments (Union). I have searched for the names Sylvester and Philip Inlow by Soundex search and cannot find them listed in Confederate service or as members of the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles. However, that doesn't mean much as the NARA records are incomplete for this and many other Confederate Indian units. Starr's book is probably correct in its assertion that they at one time or another served in Drew's Regiment; however, I would advise you to look for their military service records among the Indian Home Guard regiments.

The Oklahoma Historical Society in Okie City has copies of the Microfilm Records for these units. I don't know where you're located but if you're near Texas/Oklahoma the Federal Repository in Fort Worth, TX has all of the Confederate and Union compiled service records.

Good luck in your search. Perhaps others on this message board can provide more.

Jim Martin
