Re: Hunter's 1st Chickasaw
In Response To: Hunter's 1st Chickasaw ()

This regiment appears to be a very suspect organization. First of all, the Chickasaws were a very small tribe which already had a mounted battalion in service. It would have been virtually impossible for that tribe to field a regiment in addition. Secondly, the "muster-in roll" (the only one existing) of Hunter's regiment shows the regiment to have been mustered on 25 October 1863 in Union-occupied Tahlequah, Cherokee Nation! Thirdly, none of the officers listed in Hunter's regiment appear on any other Choctaw or Chickasaw regimental rolls, which is unusual, considering the several reorganizations those regiments went through. Especially the first organization of the 1st Choctaw & Chickasaw Regiment (July 1861-July 1862) was a training ground for future officers in Choctaw and Chickasaw organizations. Add to that the fact that Hunter appears to have had no connection with the Chickasaws or Choctaws, and that his outfit is not mentioned in any official report at all, well....My guess is that the whole regiment was a hoax. Gen. William Steele wrote once while commander of the Indian Territory that false muster rolls were to be guarded against. Hunter's regiment might very well be one.
