Battle of Island Mound Commemoration

On October 26, 2002, at 1:00 p.m., the Bates County Historical Society is sponsoring the Commemoration of the 140th Anniversary of the Battle at Island Mound.

During October 27-29, 1862, some 250 men and officers of the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteers fought and defeated a larger force of Irregular Confederate Cavalary near Butler, Mo. This engagement was the first battle of the Civil War fought by an African American Regiiment.

Come to learn more about this significant event in the history of our nation, and to help us preserve the battlefield.
