Re: Watie at Fort McCulloch
In Response To: Watie at Fort McCulloch ()

In late May 1865, Stand Watie writes to his wife, Sarah, from Boggy Depot. He says he is going to an intertribal council at Nail's Mill, which is, of course, adjacent to Ft McCulloch.

On June 29, 1865, he writes from:

Executive Office for the Cherokee Nation
Ft. Mccullough, C.N.

This letter commissions Colonels W.P. Adair and James M. Bell to meet with Maj. Gen. Herron (USA) at his headquarters in Shreveport LA on behalf of the Cherokee in the Indian Territory and the States [Ark & Texas].

It is signed:

Stand Watie
Principal Chief
Cherokee Nation

Attest
W.P. Boundinot
National Secretary

Cherokee Cavaliers, p. 234
