Samuel Sixkiller

I was reading Art Burton's "Black Red and Deadly" when I came upon something that I hope can be answered here. In the chapter on Captain Samule Sixkiller (police rank, postwar) it stated that his father Redbird was a Lt. in a Kansas Artillery company, and that after Sam ran off to the Confederacy with a buddy he deserted to serve under his father near Ft. Gibson. While I have found Private Sam Sixkiller on the roster of the 1st Cherokee Cav. CSA, I can't find him or his father serving the Union. I was wondering if anyone could point me to which artillery unit this could have been. Thanks.
