I got started on this topic reading about a smallpox outbreak among both the Union Indian Brigade and Livingston's men who were in winter camp with Watie's Regiment in the winter of 1862-1863. There was particular concern that few of the Indian soldiers or refugees had been vaccinated and were at high risk of fatality from the disease. In the early 1700s, it is claimed the Cherokee Nation's population was cut in half by two smallpox epidemics. There are claims that smallpox killed 90 percent of the population of the western hemisphere in the 50 years after Columbus' arrival in 1492.
