Curtis E. Payne,
What is the name of your book about Howell's Light Artillery Battery? ..How can I get a copy?
Your Sylvanous Howell is mentioned on 11 pages of my 134-page Name Index (3 were 1846 records).
"C.C. Alexander" was mentioned on 3 pages of my huge book, including an 1846 record that shows that he owed Col. James Bourland $150.00 for expenses incurred during the Mexican War. ..I have both C.C. Alexander and Sylvanus Howell in the same militia listing that I'd be happy to send you upon request.
The above records are from THE BOURLAND PAPERS found in the Library of Congress. ..I transcribed them as well as The Bourland Border Cavalry Regiment microfilm from the National Archives plus 240 militia listings and the accompanying militia brigade correspondence of 34 North Texas counties (that has a surprisingly large number of references to Indian Territory) in my 1,022-page book.
Two deserters of Howell's Artillery Battery were listed as 2 of 480 men of the Brush Battalion of North Texas that were in Col. James Bourland's command:
E.A. Clampett
S.R. Jackson. ..Please send me the skinny on these men.
My book is about the Civil War era from the South Canadian River and Dallas plus Texarkana and Childress down to Abilene TX. ...And yes, it is the "South Canadian River" for gray-haired researchers. ..Whoever changed the name didn't ask the residents.
