Doughery ("Winchester") Colbert was born in Miss. in 1810,he was the son (Samuel Colbert)or adopted son of the famous Chickasaw Chief Levi Colbert.Winchester came to Indian Territory durning the early part of removal-- (He was in Doaksville in abt 1837-His "Rich"Uncle George died in Doaksville in 1838-his Uncle William died in May 1842 and is buried at Fort Townson)--and by 1842,he had settled his family near where Canadian,Ok is located today.
The Colbert home was on the south side of the north fork,a community of the Creek Nation."Winchester" Colbert showed a lively interest in politics after coming to Indian Territory.He served on the general council and in 1850,he was elected Chief.{In 1855 signed the land deal to buy the Lands from the Choctaws}
"Winchester" was also very active in the negotations leading to the formation of the chickasaw Nation,as well as the org. of the new Goverment.. He was serving as Chickasaw Chief in 1850's when the council approved as act to est. Colbert Institute. It was through "Winchester" effort and influence that the school was located at Perryville,and was named in his honor.(Some,him some say his Uncle?

Perryville was near where McAlester is located today. The Colbert home was about 15 west of Perryville.
It is not known when "Winchester" moved to Pontotic,but since he was a member of the building committee apppointed to relocate the boarding school in 1853,he might have settled there about the time construction begin on the institute buildings. However 'Winchester" could have moved to Pontotic before the school was build.We do know that five of his children lived and died in Pontotic County. They were Humphrey,Margaret,Isabelle,George,and Eliza.

While living at Pontotic, "Winchester" served as a senator during the first term of the New Chickasaw Gov. He had been narrowly defeated by Cyrus Harris for the office of
governor,but was elected goveror in 1858. After being defeated again in 1860 by Cyrus Harris,"Winchester" was elected Governor again in 1862 and served consecutive terms throught 1866."Winchester" Colbert reached the pinnacle of his political career durning his stay in Pontotic. This must of have been an active and fulfilling time for him. He had seen his people form a new Nation and being to emerge from the tragic period that followed removal. Although he moved to Oil Springs sometime After the Civil War,"Winchester retured to the 'old'neighborhood in Pontotic in the twilight of his life,here he remained until his death.

One of his sons was named George "Winchester" Colbert B abt 1836 and died Feb 1917 at age 81, he served as Legislature.and as a Interpreter, he married a Choctaw Sukey Dau of Ben Courtney. He was entitled to operate a
station being a inter-married citizen.His Son was Abijah Colbert- I think he likely was one of the W.P.A.Paper?
Winchester Sr. was not entitled, referance to the Boggy Station after the War.
