Re: Phillips Expedition - Feb 1864

Danny- What I was saying is that the combined Nations (Choctaw and Chickasaw) “split” as opposed to the Chickasaw having to "buy" the land from the Choctaws. I'm no expert on the subject so I went back and read what I could find and I think you can make the argument that the Chickasaw did 'buy' the land as a lot of money changed hands to arrive at a negotiated settlement.

You mentioned Hillubee Town which I assume to the same as Hillabee (variously spelled, and misspelled in the ORs in one case as “Willabee”). Patti Rochette says it was either “McIntosh County: twp 9N ran 14E or twp 11N ran 16E.” Post-war maps show a Hillorby Square on the North Fork but reports in the ORs put this place along the north bank of the Canadian in the vicinity Patti shows.

As to Phillips being in the Choctaw Nation in Feb. 1864, he would have been in the Choctaw Nation when he crossed the Canadian at the mouth of Little River. The maps of the period show Cochran’s Academy on Middle Boggy in the Choctaw Nation. It is possible that Phillips mistakenly thought they were on the Middle Boggy in the Choctaw Nation when they were really at or near Robert Cochran’s on Clear Boggy (near Colbert’s Institute that had moved a few years before from Perryville).

I think he came down the Choctaw-Chickasaw border. Wapanucka (official name of the Chickasaw “Rock Academy”) on Delaware Creek (i.e., Wapanucka Creek) is only three miles west of the border. Of course, Ft Washita is just inside the Chickasaw border too.

Phillips did write to the Choctaw leaders in council at Chata Tamaha (“Choctaw City” as Armstrong Academy was called) at the same time (from Camp Kagi/Kahi on Feb 15th) which may have been at or near the Rock Academy. G.W. Grayson says Creek refugees (including his mother) were at the Rock Academy at the time of Perryville (Aug '63) but later moved closer to the Red River -- maybe because of Phillips' Expedition. Grayson nearly died of smallpox in the 'hospital' at the Rock Academy in early 1865.

It's about time for you to hit the road, isn't it? You need internet access in the RV.
