Robert,
The Cherokee were moved from Kansas to the vicinity of Neosho. There were so many refugees, they needed to spread them out. Annie Abel's books cover the pro-Union refugees and the difficulties or failures in providing for them, from the papers of the Office of Indian Affairs. The ORs have some correspondence as the military was trying to provide some subsistance. Wiley Britton's books talk about the Cherokee refugees following the Indian Home Guard regiment from Neosho back into the Cherokee Nation.
