The First Kansas Colored Volunteers’ designation was officially changed to the Seventy-ninth United States Colored Volunteers on Dec. 13, 1864. The commanding officer of company K 1st Kansas Inf., Captain Welch was not present at Flat Rock. He missed the battle due to a wound he received in the thigh at the battle of Poison Springs Ark. on April 14, 1864, and was on detached service. Captain Welch would be killed that November in a skirmish at Timbered Hills ten miles North East of Cabin Creek. Compiled service Records National Archives, Washington D. C.
