Stephen,
I have contacted my father for further information to help with the discussion. The ancestor who was of the age to be a soldier in the war,and according to family tradition full-blood Cherokee; but with no proof, was Wash Clardy/Claridy. According to his daughter's death certificate he was born in Tenn. with no town or date given. My father has found possible references online of Wash being born in Ala. and possibly being Preston Washington. The death certificate just says Washington. So, I'm not sure if his family would have been old settlers, or if they just lived outside the nation.
